MSOC | Gaels Out Shoot FDU But Finish with 0-0 Tie
9/4/2023 4:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Men's Soccer out shot the FDU Knights on Monday afternoon, but played to a scoreless draw at Saint Mary's Stadium to move to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Gaels out shot the Knights 23-7 overall and 5-0 in shots on frame, along with a 60 to 40 percent advantage in possession time. Saint Mary's forced FDU's keeper and defenders to make some spectacular plays to keep the Gaels off the board, but there were moments of hesitation on pulling the trigger on a shot that allowed the Knights to recover and force a more difficult shot for the Gaels.
The close calls began when Riley Lynch forced the keeper to make a big save in the 14th minute that bounced off the chest of the keeper before he managed to corral the rebound. Toke Amtrup flicked a left-footed shot on net after a free kick into the penalty area by Storm Schmidt Hollensted, and the FDU keeper had to leap to his left and stop the ball in midair to keep the Gaels from going ahead.
The Gaels had two other great chances in the 39th minute when Justin Sosa was robbed of a goal by the Knights keeper, and George Herbert's follow up shot went off the cross bar. Cameron O'Brien would have his first good scoring chance as a Gael, working his way between defenders and pushing a shot forward that required a diving save from the keeper in the 42nd minute.
In the 48th minute Lynch lofted a shot toward the upper right corner of the goal that was punched away by a leaping save. It would be more of the same in the 58th minute, when Wade Muttitt had a shot to the left of the six-yard box that the keeper was able to fight off.
SMC finally got one past the FDU keeper Spencer King only for a Knights defender to clear a shot from Tyler Hardin that had gotten over King in the 65th minute. The Gaels would have some more good late attack time from Lynch in the 88th minute, but he had a shot blocked and another just go wide right of the net, sealing the nil-nil tie.
