MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Baseball Program has announced it is retiring the jersey numbers of two members of the SMC Athletics Hall of Fame, in Mark Teahen and Corbin Burnes.
Mark Teahen's number 10 will be retired after playing for Saint Mary's from 2000-02, and finishing his collegiate career as the all-time leader in batting average at SMC. He was selected with a supplemental first-round pick (39th overall) in the 2002 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. His selection was even featured in the book Moneyball by Michael Lewis.
In his three seasons as a Gael, Teahen hit .368 with a .466 on-base percentage, and slugged .527 for a .993 OPS over 157 collegiate games. In his final season at SMC, he hit over .400 on the year, with a triple-slash line of .412/.493/.624. He had 80 hits that junior season with a whopping 1.117 OPS, and struck out only 17 times on the year.
That career .368 average is the program record at Saint Mary's, his .412 batting average in '02 is third all-time in program history, and his 80 hits from that junior year are fourth in program history for a single season.
The Redlands, Calif. native played seven seasons in the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays. His father was born in St. Mary's, Ontario, Canada, which allowed Teahen to become a naturalized Canadian citizen and play for Team Canada in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Teahen is a career .268 hitter over 831 Major League games, and had over 30 doubles in a season three times in his career. He was inducted into the Saint Mary's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. Teahen finished his pro career playing in the Italian Baseball League, and his time in Italy inspired he and his wife Lauren to open their wine bar, Sorso, in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Burnes' number 16 will be retired after playing for Saint Mary's from 2014-16 and going 15-11 with a 3.65 ERA in his time as a Gael. He finished his SMC career by going 8-2 with a 2.48 ERA in 2016 before being a fourth-round pick of the Brewers that year.
He was named an All-American by Baseball America and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper after that dominant 2016 season. Burnes was named First Team All-West Coast Conference while helping lead SMC to its first-ever WCC regular season championship, first-ever WCC Tournament appearance, and subsequently its first-ever tournament title, which led to the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bakersfield, Calif. native was named the NL Cy Young Award winner in 2021, leading the league in earned run average (2.43), strikeouts per nine innings (12.6), strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.88), and home runs allowed per nine innings pitched (0.4).
His Cy Young Award win was the first by a former Gael, and he also tossed a no-hitter during the regular season against Cleveland. Burnes went 11-5 in 167 innings pitched, striking out 234 batters to just 34 walks in 28 starts on his way to the Cy Young Award. The former Gael started the season setting the record for batters struck out without allowing a walk at 58.
Overall, Burnes is 45-27 with a 3.26 ERA as a big leaguer. He followed up his Cy Young season by posting a 2.94 ERA in 202 innings and leading the National League in strikeouts with 243, and finished seventh in Cy Young voting in 2022. In 2023, he was 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA over 193.2 innings pitched, and led the league in walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP) with a 1.069. He was inducted into the SMC Hall of Fame just last year.
For the first time in four years the Saint Mary's Baseball program is able to sell tickets at their home ballpark, which are available by clicking here. The Gaels will play their first season in Brother Ronald Gallagher Stadium beginning February 16, 2024 against Oakland University.
