ERIE, Colo. - The Mark Simpson Invitational came down to the wire as Saint Mary's recorded seven birdies from their counting scores in their final five holes to jump back into third place for their second top-three finish of the fall season. Colorado State ran away with the title with an 18-under final round performance but Aidan Lee put together a final round 68 (-4) to finish in a three way tie for first place.
Tournament host Colorado would allow for a one hole playoff and Lee and UTEP's Dylan Teeter would go on to par 18 to finish as co-individual champions for Lee's first collegiate win. His 13-under three round performance also went down as a new career best in his third year as a Gael. Senior Zack Missigman also finished inside the top-10 at 9-under-par while Connor Reis and Avery Lazarski also finished their three rounds in red figures, good for t-18th and t-28th.
"Aidan was on his game this week", said head coach Scott Hardy. "He showed leadership and displayed his ability to score in a variety of ways. I was particularly happy to see his wedge play take a step forward. Winning a college tournament is hard, especially in a large 104 player field like this. All of us were excited for Aidan and know more good golf is to come from him".
After five bogeys as a team from the four counting scores, the Gaels turned things around and went on to record 13 birdies in their final 13 holes to finish 9-under-par as a team. Saint Mary's fell to as low as fifth place on the final day but showed great resilience to jump back into third place and were just one stroke shy of a tie for second with host Colorado. After slow starts from Saint Mary's in their first two events, head coach Scott Hardy and his group flipped the script with an impressive 20-under opening round on Monday and they were able to ride that into a top three finish for their second of the year.
"I was very pleased with our team performance this week. We started fast and played a great first round. We had slow starts the first two tournaments so this showed progress. To come out firing and shoot one of the schools lowest rounds ever in the first 18 holes was a great step forward. We struggled a little in round two and at the start of round three but we turned it on at the end and earned a very solid result. I was proud of the effort and resilience the guys showed all the way until the end" (Hardy).
