SB | Gaels Drop a Pair in Reno
3/26/2024 7:57:00 PM | Softball
RENO, Nev. — The Gaels (19-13) were given all they could handle with the Nevada Wolf Pack (27-7), dropping both ends of a doubleheader via the run rule. Saint Mary's mustered up early offense in both contests, but could not maintain their early leads against the offensive juggernaut that was the Nevada lineup.
GAME ONE: NEV 13, SMC 2
It was a dream start for the Gaels, who, with two outs in the first, plated a pair to go ahead in the early goings. It started with Marissa Montelongo, who launched a ball to dead center and over the wall for her second career home run. Sam Buckley followed that up with a double to the left center field gap, and would score on a fly ball off the bat of Tori Cervnates that was dropped by the Wolf Pack left fielder.
The lead would quickly be erased by the Wolf Pack in the bottom half, as they would launch a two run blast with nobody out. While the Gaels would keep the game level through one, Nevada hung a seven spot up in the second to open up the floodgates, eventually winning 13-2 in five innings.
The Gaels logged just four hits in the game, three of which were of the extra base variety. Gracie Carpenter notched her first career hit, a double to left in the second innings.
GAME TWO: NEV 11, SMC 3
Again, the Gaels jumped out to an early lead. Hannah Ferguson was plunked and Marissa Montelongo and Sam Buckley were both walked to load the bases with one away. Tori Cervantes would draw a third walk in the inning to plate Ferguson, and Alex Cutonilli would ground out to third, scoring Montelongo. In deja vu fashion, the Gaels once again led 2-0 through the first half an inning.
Nevada would cut the deficit to one in the second before plating four in both the third and fourth innings. The Gaels best chance to rally back came in the fifth. Fergsuon led off the inning with an infield single and Jenavee Amador reached on an error to put runners at the corners with one away. Buckley lifted a fly ball to right, deep enough to plate Ferguson to make it 9-3. Nevada would score two more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the run rule, 11-3.
The middle third of the lineup, consisting of Sam Buckley, Tori Cervantes and Alex Cutonilli accounted for the three runs driven in for the Gaels.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will take eight days to regroup before heading back to Berkeley to take on Cal for the second time this season on April 3. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
