BSB | Gaels Stifle Bears in First of Two Game Set

BERKELEY, Calif. — Saint Mary's Baseball (19-11) picked up another signature non-conference win, shutting down the Cal Bears (16-14) 6-1 on Tuesday night in Berkeley. It was the fifth time this season that the Gaels pitching staff combined to surrender one or fewer runs against an opponent in what was a dominant performance.

Ryan Sanders earned the start on the hill, and worked three scoreless innings of one hit baseball. Sanders only issued 39 pitches in the outing, and could be available for the Gaels conference series with LMU this weekend. He exited the game with a 2-0 lead, thanks to Coleman Schmidt and Aiden Taurek. Schmidt picked up where he left off with his walk-off winner against GCU on Sunday, knocking in a run with a single in his first plate appearance of the day in the second, while Taurek launched his second career home run in the fourth.

Dylan Delvecchio worked the next two frames scoreless, working around three walks and one hit batter to hang up a pair of zeroes on the scoreboard. Saint Mary's added two more runs in the fifth on a Connor "Bear" Harrison RBI single and an Aiden Taurek sacrifice fly, and one more in the sixth when Dalton Mashore came around to score on one of three Cal errors.

Lefty specialist Owen Cuffe was next out of the pen, recording an out before surrendering a walk and a hit batter before giving way to Adam Enyart, who stranded both inherited runners to end the sixth. Harrison homered to dead center to give the Gaels their largest lead at 6-0.

The shutout was finally broke up in the eighth, when Enyart gave up a leadoff home run after a 10 pitch battle, but responded by setting down the next three hitters. Justin Santiago closed out the ninth with a perfect 1-2-3 inning to see the Gaels to their seventh victory over their last eight.

Bear Harrison made sure the Cal fans in attendance knew that Berkeley was Bear's (and not Bear) Territory, going 3-5 at the plate with a couple of runs driven in. Aiden Taurek also picked up a pair of RBI, while keeping his batting average above 0.400 at 0.471. Pitching, however, was the biggest storyline tonight, as the combination of Sanders, Delvecchio, Cuffe, Enyart and Santiago surrendered just three hits, the second fewest allowed by the Gaels in any outing this season. Sanders earned the win in the scheduled bullpen game, moving to 4-0 on the campaign. The was Coach Eric Valenzuela's 199th as a Gael and 299th in his career.

The Gaels and Bears will square off again tomorrow at 3 PM, this time in Moraga.
