MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped game two of its West Coast Conference series to Gonzaga 14-4 Saturday afternoon.
Saint Mary' (22-16, 8-6) got back to double-digit hits for the 28th time this season including a team-high three hits from sophomore catcher Ian Armstrong. The Gaels struggled to hang a crooked number though as Gonzaga (22-14, 11-3) was able to post 14 runs and win in run-rule fashion for its 11th conference win of the season.
Along with his three hits, Armstrong connected on his eighth home run of the year with a solo shot in the fourth inning to make it a four-run ballgame. The long ball would put him in a three-way tie for the team lead along with Jacob Johnson and Makoa Sniffen. Diego Castellanos recorded a hit to extend his hit streak to a season-high 15 games while leadoff hitter Tanner Griffith also went 1-for-4 with his ninth double of the season in the third inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior transfer Cam Staton returned to the bump for his seventh start of the season. Staton worked out of trouble in the first, allowing just two runs after loading the bases with a pair of walks, but the Zags jumped out first yet again with a 2-0 lead. The lead would get cut in half in the third thanks to an RBI double from Tanner Griffith, his ninth of the season.
Gonzaga would add on though with a pair of clutch two-out hits in the fourth inning, a two-RBI single from shortstop Ricky Sanchez and then a two-RBI double from Ryder Young to give them a 6-1 lead.
SMC catcher Ian Armstrong got one back for the Gaels with a solo homer in the fourth, his team-leading eighth of the season. The Zags continued to roll though as they put up three runs in the sixth and a four spot in the eighth to secure the 14-4 run-rule victory.
Armstrong led the Gaels with three hits while third baseman Brady Petit played a nice glove in the field and also went 2-for-4, recording his 13th multi-hit game of the season.
