WSOC | Gaels in Riverside for Final Match Up Before Conference Play

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Women's Soccer team are heading to UC Riverside as they take on the Highlanders before they open conference play on Saturday September 28th.

GAELS RECAP
The Gaels were dominating the first half of the match against Cal, with Briana Salvetti attempting a shot in the first 32 seconds of the game. The Bears followed with a shot to the bottom center of the goal, giving SMC goalkeeper Kate Plachy her first save of the night. 
 
After a back and forth battle between both teams, the Gaels earned a penalty in the 39th minute. Savetti lined up for the attempt and put the first goal on the board to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead at the half
 
California started the second half with three attempts before SMC put their first. Emmie Ennis attempted her first shot of the night shooting top right just outside the goal. In the 63rd minute, Cal evened the score and seven minutes later took the lead as Noelle Bond-Flasza scored. 
 
In the final 10 minutes of the match, Emma Barthel and Savannah Schwarze attempted one last time for the Gaels but could not score. Cal wrapped up the game outshooting SMC 13 to seven, followed by Plachy's six saves. 
 
ABOUT UC RIVERSIDE (Big West)
The Highlanders opened up the 2024 season to 0-3 as they competed against Idaho (0-3), UCLA (0-3), and New Mexico (0-1). They are now sitting at a 2-6 overall record as they have defeated UTEP (1-0) on the road and UNLV (1-0) at home. The two goals that the Highlanders have scored have come from both freshmen, Mimi Dominguez and Nikki Velasco. Sophomore goalkeeper, has played and started in all eight of the Highlanders matches where she has accumulated 42 saves. In the Idaho and UNLV match, she earned her career high of seven saves in each game.
