MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's battled to a hard fought scoreless draw in their match against the Portland Pilots Saturday afternoon. The face off was action packed from start to finish, featuring impressive defense from two of the WCC's top teams. This result marks the Gaels third tie of the season and their first since week one of conference play in their 1-1 draw against San Francisco. Both teams remain in a tie for second place in the WCC, sitting at 3-1-2.
FIRST HALF SMC 0 - 0 POR
The Gaels opened the match with intensity, immediately applying pressure against the Pilots and creating several opportunities. Despite the momentum, Saint Mary's was unable to capitalize on the chances.
Within the first 45 minutes of the match, Saint Mary's had outshot Portland 9-1, with five of those shots on target. One of the best opportunities came from a Gaels throw in from Molly Silva, which bounced around before finding its way back to Ashlyn Vaughn just outside the 18-yard box. The freshman fired a shot to the top right side of the goal, forcing Portland's goalkeeper Sophia Hills to make a leaping save to keep the match level.
FINAL SMC 0 - 0 POR
Momentum shifted in the final 45 minutes of play as Portland began to find its rhythm and apply more pressure in the attacking third, outshooting the Gaels 5-3 in the half. Saint Mary's defense held strong, keeping the Pilots off the scoreboard. An impressive tackle from Isabel Lendman stopped a dangerous counterattack and helped preserve a clean sheet late in the half.
Full 90 minute efforts came from defenders Amari Hicks, Madison Casado, and Aleiyah Schexnayder, joined by midfielders Savannah Schwarze and Maddie Lucas. Despite the draw, the Gaels recorded their ninth shutout of the season to remain atop in the WCC in that category. The Gaels have five conference games remaining and still control their own fate as they head down south to take on San Diego next week.
LOOKING AHEAD
The result brings the Gaels overall record to 8-2-3 and their conference record to 3-1-2, keeping them in a tie with Portland for second in the WCC standings. The Gaels continue to march forward through conference play as they travel down to San Diego to take on the Toreros on Wednesday, October 22nd. Kick off is slated for 7:00 PM and the match will be available to stream on ESPN+. Tickets can also be purchased online at smcgaels.com.
