MBB | Moraga Gets a Dose of Green as Gaels Welcome Ohio and North Texas
11/10/2025 12:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. — It's been a strong start for the Saint Mary's Gaels (2-0), who took care of business with a pair of 20+ point victories over two strong mid-major opponents, St. Thomas and Chattanooga. The Gaels offense has been firing on all cylinders, while the defense continues to make life tough for any opposing offense to operate. Week two features another pair of mid-major foes for the Gaels, as the Ohio Bobcats (1-1) will make their first roadtrip of the season to Moraga on Tuesday, and the North Texas Mean Green (3-0) will head south from Corvallis after taking on the Oregon State Beavers on Wednesday for a Friday night clash.

Saint Mary's has put up 80+ points in back-to-back contests to open a season for the first time since 2018. The Gaels rank in the top-50 in the country in field goal percentage, three point percentage and free throw percentage through two contests. After shooting 50.9% from the field, 42.3% from three and 78.9% from the stripe in their opener against St. Thomas, all solid numbers, they surpassed all of them in their encore performance against Chattanooga, going 57.8%, 50% and 93.1% respectively in those three categories. It was just the third time in the past decade that the Gaels shot 50% or better from the field and from three, while also shooting 90% or better from the stripe, with the other two times coming against Northern Kentucky (12/21/23) and Alabama Birmingham (11/27/15). Individually, the biggest contributor to this hot offensive start has been Mikey Lewis, as the sophomore out of Oakland ranks 14th in the country scoring 25.5 points per game, shooting 58.3% from the field, 61.5% from three and a perfect 100% (15-15) from the stripe.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS
Ohio has begun their 2025-26 campaign the same way their 2024-25 season went, at 0.500. After going 16-16 last year, the Bobcats opened the year with a four point loss to Arkansas State, followed by a four point win over Illinois State. With both of those games taking place at home, the Bobcats will now be tested on the road for the first time this year in Moraga. Now in year seven at the helm, Head Coach and Bobcat alum Jeff Boals has yet to experience a sub-0.500 season, as he looks to guide the Bobcats this season back to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in his tenure. Boals returns a pair of starters from last year's squad, seniors Aidan Hadaway and Jackson Paveletzke, and have been supplemented by in-conference transfer Javan Simmons, who came over from in-state foe Toledo. That trio has combined to average 50.5 of the Bobcats 78.5 points per contest. The Gaels and Bobcats have met three times in program history, with the Bobcats holding the narrow 2-1 lead in the series. Most recently, the Gaels defeated Ohio 70-63 to win the 2007 Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.
ABOUT THE MEAN GREEN
The Gaels matched up with the defending NIT Champs in week one, and now will get a look at another team that played in the NIT Semifinals in the North Texas Mean Green. After going 27-9 a year ago and finishing second in the American Athletic Conference, the Mean Green went deep into the NIT, defeating Furman, before three straight two point contests, a pair of wins over Arkansas State and Oklahoma State before a heartbreaking loss to UC Irvine. Since that time, former Head Coach Ross Hodge departed for West Virginia, and Daniyal Robinson took the reins after three seasons at the helm of Cleveland State, but its been the same solid success with a 3-0 start, as Coach Robinson looks to guide the Mean Green to their ninth straight winning season, their longest streak of winning seasons since the early part of the 20th century. The Mean Green will head to Corvallis to take on Oregon State on Wednesday, before getting the Gaels on Friday night. Coach Robinson brought in four of his student-athletes from Cleveland State to North Texas, including defending Horizon Conference Freshman of the Year
Je'Shawn Stevenson. Stevenson doesn't look like there's a sophomore slump in sight, leading the team averaging 15 points per game and two steals per contest. All-time, the Gaels are 3-0 against the Mean Green, including a 63-33 home victory in 2022 that featured a seven point performance from then freshman, Harry Wessels.
