STANFORD & SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Split between the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, 17 different Gaels were in action on Thursday and Friday. Headlined by three top-10 finishes, the Gaels continue to show massive growth week in and week out on the track.
Getting things started early on Thursday was TK Berhe, who competed in the 10,000m race at the Fanelli. The La Verne transfer finished in sixth place in the field of 74 runners, with a time of 29:45.16. This was Berhe's first 10,000 meter race since 2023, and he finished just 5.6 seconds off of his career best with his second fastest time in competition.
The other 16 Gaels raced on Friday. At Stanford, Alexandro Alvarez stole the show with a PR in the 1500m at 3:50.40. This is the fourth straight consecutive 1500m race for Alvarez in which he's set a new PR. Alvarez placed third in the sixth section of the 1500m race, missing a win by less than half of a second. Like Berhe, Jonathan Velasco competed in the 10,000m race, just 30 miles south and 24 hours later. Velasco placed fourth in section three of the event, in his first ever 10,000m since his freshman year at Wake Forest. His time of 29:20.74 was also a PR. Back at the Fanelli, Julius Largaespada paced a group of nine Gaels in the 1500m, placing 48th in the field of 173 runners, and serving as one of only 54 runners in that field to finish under the 4:00.0 mark with a time of 3:59.46 in his Saint Mary's 1500m debut. Aidan Donovan led a group of three Gaels in the 5000m race, finishing 72nd out of 166 racers with a time of 15:07.64, smashing his previous PR by nearly 10 seconds.
The Gaels will have a couple of weeks off before returning to SF State for the Johnny Mathis Invitational.
