MSOC | Another Road Point, Gaels Draw 2-2 with Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Gaels five-game road trip continued Sunday afternoon with a matchup against Big West member Cal Poly. For the sixth straight game, Saint Mary's scored first to take a 1-0 lead just 13 seconds into the match. After going down 2-1 before the end of the first half, true freshman Cameron Kobey would net the equalizer in the 63rd minute to help earn another hard fought point on the road.

Freshman Tommy Davis made his collegiate debut for the Gaels in goal, earning the start in his 21 minutes of action. Junior transfer Kayvon Monfared scored the game's opening goal which would go down as one of the fastest goals in program history. He would finish with a goal and three shots in his 35 minutes.

FIRST HALF SMC 1-2 CP

Saint Mary's has had a good habit of scoring first throughout the 2025 season and in tonight's match, it only took them 13 seconds thanks to Kayvon Monfared. Monfared would net his first goal as a Gael and shock the Mustangs early to put Saint Mary's up 1-0.

Despite a three-game week for Cal Poly, they were able to bounce back and score two goals before the end of the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Cal Poly outshot Saint Mary's 10-3 over the first 45 minutes but only had two shots hit the target.

FINAL SMC 2-2 CP

The Gaels started to find their footing offensively in the second half, tallying five shots compared to just three in the first half. The equalizer would finally come in the 63rd minute thanks to freshman midfielder Cameron Kobey, his first collegiate goal. Kobey finished with 50 minutes of action and got his third start of the season.

Finishing the game in goal, Sam Bentley was only forced to make two saves as the Gaels would hold on for the 2-2 draw, their third of the season. Bastian Toelhoej, Hubert Deragon and Jona Starek would play all 90 minutes while Monfared led the team with three shot attempts.

LOOKING AHEAD

Saint Mary's earned their third draw of the season and move to 0-3-3 overall. The Gaels have one final tune up before their conference opener as they are set to take on Sacramento State on Friday, September 19th, concluding a five-game road trip. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM and the match can be streamed live on ESPN+.
