Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WSOC | Make it Five! Gaels Upset 16th Ranked Georgetown for Fifth Straight Shutout

Washington, D.C. — The Saint Mary's women's soccer team capped off their east coast weekend with a massive 2-0 victory over 16th ranked Georgetown. This win marks the Gaels fifth straight shutout, their first time recording five consecutive shutouts since 2001, and their first five-game win streak since 2011. Along with all the historic markers from today's win, the Gaels secured their first win over a ranked opponent since defeating 13th ranked Washington State back in 2023.

The scoring began in the 24th minute when Georgetown put the ball into their own net, securing Saint Mary's an early one-goal advantage. The Gaels doubled their lead in the second half as junior forward Sydney Middaugh scored her third goal of the season to seal the 2-0 win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Plachy continues to anchor the Gaels defense, recording six saves off of the Hoyas 20 shots. With yet another shutout, she now ranks sixth all-time in program history with 11 career shutouts and lowers her goals against average to 1.14.

FIRST HALF | SMC 1 - 0 GEO

In the 24th minute, Georgetown's own goal put the Gaels on the board, giving Saint Mary's the early lead. From there, the Gaels defense led by Amari Hicks, Molly Silva, Jessie Hawes, and Aleiyah Schexnayder kept the Hoyas at bay and preserved the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

FINAL | SMC 2 - 0 GEO

Saint Mary's put the game out of reach when Hesperia native Sydney Middaugh netted a goal off an assist from Kate Plachy who sprung Middaugh into the attack with a long ball. Despite being outshot 9-1 in the second half, the Gaels defense and composure allowed them to walk away with a huge road victory over a nationally ranked opponent.

Full 90 minute efforts came from defenders Hicks and Silva, forward Middaugh, midfielder Maddie Lucas and Plachy in goal. This would also go down as Saint Mary's first ever win over the Hoyas in what was their first all-time meeting. With the win, the Gaels improve to 5-1-1 overall for their best start through seven games since 2021 and they will enter conference play next week with the best record out of any WCC program.

LOOKING AHEAD

After their big road win over 16th ranked Georgetown, Saint Mary's will return to Moraga to rest up and prepare for their WCC opener next week. The Gaels will host Gonzaga on Wednesday, September 24th at 4:00 PM. Game information, media and ticket links can be found at smcgaels.com.
