BSB | Gaels Drop Shootout in Game Two to CSUN, Rubber Match Set for Sunday
2/21/2026 8:05:00 PM | Baseball
MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team scored five runs in the first inning of Saturday's game two contest against CSUN but the Matadors got a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning to contribute to a 12-7 come-from-behind victory.
The Gaels had three home runs for the third consecutive game dating back to last weekend's series with Creighton but failed to hold on late as CSUN (4-2) scored in five of the final six innings to rally for the five-run victory in Moraga.
Tanner Griffith returned to the lineup and went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Makoa Sniffen, Nick Allred and Jared Mettam each homered to give Saint Mary's (2-3) a conference-leading 11 on the season. First-year Gael Cam Staton got his second start of the season, completing four innings in the no-decision while redshirt freshman David Roberts got hung up for the loss in his inning and a third in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a 1-2-3 inning for Staton to start the ballgame, Saint Mary's got off to a hot start with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ian Armstrong doubled to deep center field to score Griffith for the first run of the game and then Brady Petit singled to left to plate Armstrong from second, his second RBI of the season. Sniffen then came to the plate where he blasted his first career home run, a three-run shot to left field to give the Gaels an early 5-0 lead.
Despite the early start from the Gaels, CSUN battled back with three runs in the second inning thanks to back-to-back homers from Cameron Calvillo and Matthew Pena. The Matadors continued to find momentum, scoring a single run in three of the next four innings to tie the game at six. Saint Mary's got to six runs after a solo-shot from Nick Allred in the fourth before the Matadors plated runs in the fifth and sixth inning to knot the game at six.
The bats went quiet for Saint Mary's over the middle innings but they appeared to score the game-winner in the seventh inning with a solo shot from senior shortstop Jared Mettam. Mettam sparked the Gaels dugout with a first-pitch homer for his first of the season and 13th of his career. David Roberts came in relief for the Gaels in the seventh inning but after a clean first inning of work for Roberts, the Matadors were able to get a bunt single and draw a pair of walks to force a pitching change. Sophomore Lukas Sarantos would come in but give up a momentum-swinging grand slam to take a 10-7 lead. CSUN tacked on two more in the top of the ninth with another two-run shot to seal the game two 12-7 victory.
