MORAGA, Calif. — Coming off of a third place finish at the West Coast Midseason Challenge, the Saint Mary's beach volleyball team will look to make a little history this week, needing to win three of its four contests this week to set a new single season program wins record. Those four contests will be split between Wednesday at Stanford, where the Gaels will take on the host Cardinal and UC Davis Aggies, and Friday at Sacramento State, where they will take on the host Hornets and Concordia Irvine.
For the third straight year, the Gaels took home third place last week at the West Challenge, falling to West Coast Conference powers LMU and Pepperdine, but defeating Bay Area rivals San Francisco and Santa Clara to snatch the final top three spot. Hannah Glick and Barett Nolan once again paced the Gaels from the five spot, going 3-1 at the event. In the third place clinching win over Santa Clara, Coach Janice Harrer debuted a trio of new pairings with Genevieve Bane and Angelina Bour at the ones, Hannah Couch and Clarissa Klein at the twos, and Delaney Nicholls and Alisia Silverthorn at the threes, with Bane/Bour and Couch/Klein both logging wins.
The Gaels will begin their week taking on the UC Davis Aggies at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium. The Aggies are 8-12, and are riding a four game win streak. First year head coach Ari Homayun came to Davis from CSUN in the offseason, and has some work to do in order to get the Aggies to their fourth straight winning season. This will be the second meeting this year between the Aggies and Gaels, with Saint Mary's taking a 4-1 victory at Stanford back on February 28. Only the four pair of Kinley Lindhardt and Kirra Martin secured a win against the Gaels. All-time the Gaels are 5-3 against the Aggies, winning each of their last three meetings.
Riding a nine game winning streak, and unbeaten at home, the Stanford Cardinal checked in at number two in the latest AVCA Poll. 10th year head coach Andrew Fuller has built the Cardinal into a national powerhouse, and looks to take his team back to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. Like the Aggies, the Cardinal met up with the Gaels at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium on February 28, defeating the Gaels 4-1. Hannah Glick and Isla Johnson were able to pick up the lone point for the Gaels out of the fives in a tightly contested 21-17, 24-26, 15-13 decision. The Gaels are 8-18 all-time vs Stanford, with their last win against the Cardinal coming in 2019.
On Friday, the Gaels will head to the state capital, first taking on Concordia Irvine at Hornet Beach. A powerhouse DII program, the Golden Eagles have already logged a trio of wins over DI programs, including the Gaels in the finale of the Heineken Queen's Cup, and are 6-0 against DII opponents. Saint Mary's will look to exact revenge against Head Coach Jenny Griffith's squad, who they narrowly fell to, 3-2. The Gaels got wins in that one from Bella Reyes and Clarissa Klein at the threes and Hannah Glick and Isla Johnson at the fives. Saint Mary's is just 1-2 all-time against CUI.
Rounding out their week, the Gaels will square off with the Hornets of Sacramento State on Hornet Beach. This will be the first meeting between these two sides this year, after seeing each other three times last year. The Hornets are 11-12 this season, under the direction of second year head coach Angela Lewis, their most wins in program history. Led by their top pair of Aurora Bibolotti/Victoria Marthaler, the Hornets will now look for their first ever win over the Gaels in what will be their 17th all-time meeting.
