3/8/2026 12:00:00 PM | Men's Golf
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's golf team will resume its spring season at the R.E.L. Invitational down in San Diego, starting on Monday, March 9. The Gaels will compete in the annual event for the fourth consecutive season.
In 2025, the Gaels placed fifth out of the 16 participating teams, and will have some familiarity with the course, as the event has been held at the San Diego Country Club for each of the last three years. Saint Mary's has finished inside the top-10 in all seven events this season and, as a result, enters the week ranked 61st in the latest Clippd Scoreboard rankings, putting them firmly in the at-large conversation heading into the final two months of the season.
The Gaels have finished inside the top-10 in each of the last two years at the R.E.L. Invitational, including a fifth place finish last season, with now senior Aidan Lee as the team's low finisher at eight-under-par. This year's R.E.L. Invitational will kickoff on Monday with 36 holes before concluding on Tuesday with the final 18 holes of competition.

LAST TIME OUT (t-7th place at John Burns Intercollegiate)
Saint Mary's recorded its first top-10 finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii in six seasons competing in the event, placing in a tie for seventh place out of a deep 19-team field. Seven of the 19 teams were ranked in that week's Clippd rankings including No. 19 New Mexico and No. 22 San Diego State.
Tournaments on the island can always present challenges in regards to weather, and the field got just that, having to battle 15-20 mile per hour winds all week long, including showers in the practice round on Wednesday. Saint Mary's shot six-over on the first day to give themselves work to do, but they responded in a big way, with a round of six-under-par on Friday to jump seven spots on the team leaderboard. Six-under tied the tournament-low round along with No. 38 UNLV, who also shot six-under in Friday's second round.
Three of the four counting scores were in red figures for the Gaels in that second round, including a team-low round from Avery Lazarski, who recorded a 67 (-3). Sam Baumuller and Aidan Lee were the other two under-par rounds for Saint Mary's, each shooting 68's.
The Gaels shot seven-over on the final day, but only two teams in the 19-team field finished under-par, representing the toughest day on the course that week. They would fall just one spot, but stay inside the top-10 for a t-7th finish. Saint Mary's has now recorded a top-10 finish in all seven events this season, including four top-five finishes.
