MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team won its first West Coast Conference match of the season, defeating Pacific 4-1 on Saturday. The win sets up an epic showdown on Sunday in a rescheduled match with Gonzaga with a spot in the WCC Tournament on the line. It's quite simple, win and the Gaels are in.
The Etchecoin brothers made quick work out of the number two position in doubles play, defeating Pacific's duo 6-2. The Gaels would then clinch the doubles point with an intense tiebreaker win out of the top spot, 7-6 (7-3), thanks to Thibaud Maxant and Finn Dyer, who have been the team's best doubles pair of the season. Maxant and Dyer improved to 10-8 on the season as a doubles team.
Singles wins came from Juan Pedro Etchecoin, Paulo Hugo Etchecoin and a three-set win from Finn Dyer. Juan leads the team with an 8-8 record in singles play this season, while his brother Paulo improved to 6-7 this spring season. With the win and a Portland victory over Gonzaga earlier in the day, the Gaels will have a chance to qualify for the WCC Tournament with a win over the Zags on Sunday. Both teams sit at 1-5 in WCC play, with Sunday's winner taking the sixth seed in the WCC Tournament.
Saint Mary's also honored a pair of seniors in Pierre Lieutaud and Thibaud Maxant. Lieutaud was a four-year senior for the Gaels while Maxant spent five years in Moraga and is a Graduate Student here in 2026.
