SB | Gaels Set for Battle with Other West Coast Conference Unbeaten, Head to Seattle U for Three Game Set
4/8/2026 12:30:00 PM | Softball
MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team has been on quite the tear over the last four weeks. The Gaels went on a program-record 12 game win streak in that time, including a pair of wins over 14th-ranked Washington, and while that streak came to an end with a road loss to 24th-ranked Stanford, the Gaels avenged that loss a day later, besting the Cardinal in Palo Alto.
Now receiving votes in two of the three major softball top-25 polls (DI Softball and NFCA), the Gaels will get back into conference play with a battle against the only other unbeaten team in West Coast Conference action, the Seattle U Redhawks.

RECORDS FALLING, MORE APPROACHING
This past week Sam Buckley tied, and subsequently broke the program career home runs record with her 25th and 26th blasts, both coming in the Gaels' 3-2 11 inning victory over the Washington Huskies. While Buckley became the first individual player to make history this year, she will not be the last. Odhi Vasquez tied the program career wins record with her third victory of the weekend last week over Stanford. Her next win will be her 47th as a Gael, setting a new program record. Hannah Ferguson is on the precipice of breaking a trio of records: she needs just one more triple to set a new program career triples record (13), two more for a new single season triples record (9) and needs just five more stolen bases for a new program career swiped bags record (61). Last, but certainly not least, Braxton Brown needs just six more RBI to break Buckley's single season RBI record of 41, set last season. As a team, the Gaels have already shattered previous precedents, including best start in program history (20-10), longest win streak (12 straight), and longest home win streak (actively at 14 straight). They are just four wins away from a new program single season wins record, and sit at 68th in the RPI, two spots above their all-time best RPI ranking 66th from a year ago.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS
Seattle U opened its first season in WCC softball with a sweep of the Pacific Tigers last weekend, and sit tied atop the conference standings with the Gaels. Head coach Geoff Hirai became the winningest coach in program history earlier this year, now in his 11th season at the helm. Now sitting at 17-19 here in 2026, Coach Hirai looks to get his team back on the right side of 0.500 for what could be his seventh winning season in 11 years. This year's Redhawk team has torn the cover off the softball at the plate, led by Avari Morris and Taylor Fitch. Morris leads the team with a .437 batting average (also leads WCC), 55 hits and 35 runs scored, while Fitch holds a team-best 1.312 OPS, 12 home runs and 44 RBI (tied for the WCC lead). The Gaels and Redhawks were both members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference from 2010-12, and the Redhawks lead the all-time series 6-2. These three meetings will be their first as West Coast Conference foes.
