Monica Gerardo

Monica Gerardo joined the Saint Mary's women's soccer coaching staff following the hiring of Kelly Lindsey in 2005. Gerardo brings impressive on-field knowledge to the Gaels' women's soccer program as an assistant coach.

Prior to coming to Saint Mary's, Gerardo spent three seasons as assistant women's soccer coach at the University of Pittsburgh under head coach Sue-Moy Chin. She was a three-year WUSA veteran, a Mexican National Team member, and a three-time All-Big East selection.

Selected in the seventh round of the 2000 WUSA Draft by the Washington Freedom, Gerardo used her natural ability and physical presence to earn a starting role with the team. In 2002, Gerardo scored the game-winning goal in the semi-finals against Philadelphia in leading the Freedom to its first-ever Founders Cup Final.

The daughter of a Mexican father and Spanish mother, Gerardo earned an opportunity to become a member of Mexico's 1999 World Cup Team and 2000 and 2002 Gold Cup Teams. She helped Mexico qualify for its first-ever women's World Cup and played against international soccer powers Germany, Brazil and Italy. Gerardo has 30 caps (international appearances) and scored 15 goals for Mexico. She also played for Mexico in the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

At the University of Notre Dame from 1995-98, Gerardo concluded her brilliant career as the second all-time leading scorer in Irish history with 73 goals and 44 assists for 190 points. She earned First Team All-Big East honors in 1995 and 1996, and Second Team All-Big East honors in 1998. As a freshman in 1995, she was voted Big East Rookie of the Year, while leading the Irish to the NCAA Championship. Gerardo ranks second in Big East Championship history in both individual goals scored (3) and individual points (7). While at Notre Dame, Gerardo was also a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team pool from 1993-95. Gerardo received a degree in Sociology and Elementary Education in 2000 from Notre Dame.

Gerardo's playing career began at Simi Valley High School in California. A four-year letterwinner, Gerardo earned All-League and All-State honors. She also was named the Los Angeles Times High School Women's Soccer Player of the Year in 1995.
