MSOC | No. 10 Gaels Too Much for Huskies in 5-0 Win
10/5/2019 9:33:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Saint Mary's had no problem handling Northern Illinois in their furthest road trip of the season on Saturday.
DEKALB, Ill. — No. 10 Saint Mary's finished out their non-conference schedule on a very high note Saturday night as they dominated the Huskies 5-0 on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels (9-1) took the lead just 71 seconds into the match when Boyd Curry connected on Anders Engebretsen's corner kick with a clean header to put SMC up 1-0. The goal proved to be all the Gaels would need as they limited NIU (4-6-1) to just five shots in the match and one on goal.
The offense wouldn't be subdued however as Joseph Restani tallied the second goal in the 12th minute off a shot from the top of the box. The goal was Restani's sixth in his past three games.
Just under two minutes into the second half, Jake Rudel caught a cross from Restani and headed in his third goal of the season. Rudel would also score the team's fifth goal in the 73rd with assists going once again to Restani and Sebastian Schacht.
The Gaels' most impressive goal of the game however came in the 54th minute when the WCC's leading scorer, Engebretsen, curled his corner kick directly into the far upper corner for his ninth tally of the season. The brilliant goal marked the senior's 25th point of the season, already surpassing his total from last year.
Engebretsen now has nine goals and seven assists and has recorded a point in all but one match this season.
