BASE | Gaels Win Fifth Straight, Beat Broncs 5-2

MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels pick up their fifth consecutive win of the season on Wednesday after taking down Rider University 5-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Broncs struck first on Wednesday in the top of the second inning after an RBI double to deep left field scored the first run of the day. In the bottom of the second, JC Santini was hit by a pitch before a bad throw to first advanced him to third base. Joe Vranesh was walked and then Ryan Novis dropped a single into right field that scored Santini and tied the game 1-1.

  • In the top of the third inning, the Broncs tacked on a solo homerun to take the 2-1 advantage over the Gaels. Starting pitcher Jonathan Buckley was able to keep Rider under control on Wednesday and pitched five full innings, only allowed two earned runs and four hits while striking out six batters.

  • To begin the fifth inning, Vranesh hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after Austin Chauvin laid down a successful bun in the following at-bat. Eddie Haus then singled up the middle and was able to score Vranesh from third base to tie the ballgame. The bottom of the sixth saw three walks before Vranesh grounded out to third base and Charles Zaloumis scored for the Gaels and put them up 3-2.

  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Haus was walked before Gio Diaz hit a long double down the left field line that advanced Haus to third. Andrew Shebloski then grounded out to the shortstop and scored Haus, before Diaz scored on a wild pitch and put the Gaels ahead 5-2.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 3-for-3: Novis collected three hits, one RBI and two walks on Wednesday.
  • 1: Gael pitchers only gave up one walk to the Broncs.
  • 12: Total strikeouts for Rider University batters, compared to SMC (5).
  • 2: Andrew Hansen's second save of the season (2.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 K).

QUOTABLE

"This was a good test for us," said head coach Eric Valenzuela. "It was good to see our offense come through in the middle of the game and then our pitching was really able to keep us in the game until that point."
