BASE | Gaels Complete Sweep of Pacific, Win Eighth-Straight

MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels completed the three-game sweep of Pacific on Sunday after a strong, nine-run third inning propelled SMC to a 12-7 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers got started in the top of the first inning as they loaded the bases after two HBP and a single to center field. The following batter grounded a single to left field and scored the runners at second and third to give the Tigers the early, 2-0 lead and their first lead of the series. Pacific then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and give the Gaels the first out of the inning. Tyler Thorton then struck out the next two batters and got Saint Mary's out of trouble.

  • The Gaels got into more trouble in the top of the second as Thorton gave up two walks to start the inning. Another sac-bunt advanced the runners to second and third before a sac-fly scored the runner at third and put the Tigers up 3-0. Thorton struck out the following batter to end the top of the second. Pacific picked up their fourth run of the day in the top of the third inning after a blooper single to right field scored the runner on second.

  • Conor Thane hit a single to left field to begin the bottom of the third for the Gaels followed by a single over the shortstop from Ryan Novis. Gio Diaz then hit a sac-fly to right center for the second out of the inning that advanced Thane to third base. Joe Vranesh then hit one to deep left center that scored Thane and Novis, and the throw home to try and catch Novis advanced Vranesh to third. Kevin Milam then walked and Eddie Haus was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Chauvin. Chauvin drove a three-run triple to left center and put the Gaels up 5-4. Bryce Willits then lined a single to center field that drove in Chauvin for the sixth run of the day. JC Santini then hit a double to left field followed by a walk of Thane. Novis then drove a single up the middle and scored two more runs for the Gaels. Diaz then singled to bring in the ninth run, but the runner was called out at third base and the nine-run inning was over.

  • Pacific brought two more runs across the plate in the top of the fourth inning after Nathan Schneider loaded the bases and a sac-fly to right center scored the runs, but the Gaels remained ahead 9-6. The Tigers brought across their seventh run of the day in the top of the fifth after a single up the middle scored the runner on second.

  • Novis hit a single over the infield into right field with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning before Diaz walked. Vranesh then hit a single to load the bases and Milam hit a sacrifice fly to score the Gaels' 10th run of the day. Haus was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs for Chauvin, who walked and gave SMC the 11-7 lead. The umpire then called interference on the catcher on a hit from Bryce Willits that scored a run and extended the lead to five runs.

  • With one out in the top of the eighth, the Tigers hit a single up the middle, followed by another out. The next batter hit a single between short and third to put runners at first and second. The following batter hit to right field, but Haus was able to gun down the runner going home and got the Gaels out of the inning.
