MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels complete a stunning, 7-6, six-run comeback over UCSB who is ranked No. 8 in the RPI poll.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Andrew Hansen walked the first batter of the game, but the runner was then caught in a run-down for the first out of the inning. Hansen struck out the following batter but Gaucho Tommy Jew then hit a solo-homerun over the left field wall to give them the early 1-0 lead. The next batter flied out to right field and the Gaels got out of the inning with only one run allowed.
- In the top of the third inning, pitcher Jonathan Buckley gave up the second solo-homerun of the game to the nine-hitter Andrew Martinez and put the Gauchos up by two runs. Tevin Mitchell responded with a homerun of his own and UCSB was then up by three runs. The next batter hit a double to left center with no outs in the inning. With runners on first and second, Armani Smith hit a single up the third base line and drove in both runners to put the Gauchos up 5-0. Kyle Johnson then hit a triple off the right center field wall and extended the lead to six runs.
- JC Santini walked to begin the bottom of the third before Bryce Willits sent his first career homerun over the right field wall and put the Gaels within four runs of the Gauchos. The Gaels put the first two runners on base to begin the bottom of the fourth before Chauvin hit a double to left field that scored Eddie Haus and made it 6-3 with the Gauchos still on top. Jack Murphy followed with a hit up the left field side and scored Gio Diaz and made it 6-4. Joe Vranesh then hit a single to deep left center and tied the game at 6-6.
- Willits hit a leadoff double up the third base line to begin the bottom of the seventh inning followed by a walk of Ryan Novis. Kevin Milam then reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the throw to first which brought in Willits and gave the Gaels the 7-6 lead.
