WTEN | Gaels Wrap Up Regular Season This Week

Saint Mary's will play their final two matches of the year this week against San Diego and BYU.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (9-9, 5-2 WCC) will complete their regular season this weekend as they host two West Coast Conference matches. The Gaels will face off against San Diego on Friday and BYU on Saturday with both contests beginning at 11 a.m.

Saturday's match against the Cougars will also be Senior Day for the Gaels and the team will honor their lone senior, Clementine Clement, prior to the match.

LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's earned their third straight sweep over the weekend as they defeated Portland in a 4-0 decision. The Gaels also put up a hard fight against Gonzaga as they collected a win in doubles play, but ultimately fell 4-0.

In the match against the Pilots, SMC picked up wins on all courts and was led by Mariia Kozyreva as the top singles player who defeated her opponent 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Chloe Goyette and Clementine Clement also recorded wins as they overcame their opposition in straight sets. On doubles courts, the Gaels carried their momentum to clinch wins on Courts 1 and 2 to complete the shutout against Portland.

In singles play, Saint Mary's owns a 37-31 overall record and are 16-8 in conference action. Kozyreva leads the team in the No. 1 spot as she holds an 11-4 record with an 8-2 record in the last ten matchups. Kozyreva and Hind Abdelouahid also lead the team as the top tandem for the Gaels as they are 9-1 overall and have not dropped a contest in the last nine matches. The tandem was named WCC Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday after going 2-0 last week.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO
The Toreros are going into Friday's matchup with a 15-3 overall record and a 6-1 conference record. San Diego recently fell 4-0 to Pepperdine last weekend before collecting a 4-2 victory over Loyola Marymount. In their win against the Lions, the Toreros recorded two wins in doubles play and picked up three victories in singles to clinch the win.

San Diego is led by Solymar Colling who holds a 12-4 record and a perfect 5-0 conference record as the teams' top singles player. Colling and her partner, Maria-Paula Torres, lead the team in the No. 1 doubles slot with their 10-3 overall record. After taking on the Gaels, San Diego will travel to Stockton to play their last regular season contest against Pacific on Saturday.

ABOUT BYU
The Cougars (10-9, 3-4 WCC) are coming off two losses against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine as they fell 4-1 to both teams last weekend. In each matchup, BYU collected victories in straight sets in singles play but it was ultimately not enough to overcome their opposition.

As the No. 3 singles player, Polina Malykh leads the Cougars with a 13-1 record and a 4-0 conference mark. Malykh and Madeline Almeida are 9-5 in the No. 2 spot in doubles action but are 6-4 in their last ten matchups.
