WTEN | Clement, Gaels Handle Cougars on Senior Day

Saint Mary's hunkered down in singles play and took four matches to defeat BYU on Saturday.

MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels (10-10, 6-3 WCC) finished the regular season with a bang as they rolled past BYU 4-1 on Saturday to snap a two-match losing streak. Saint Mary's only senior, Clementine Clement, was honored before the contest and would go on to win her singles match in her final competition at the Korth Tennis Complex.

No. 27 Mariia Kozyreva and Hind Abdelouahid won the Gaels' only doubles match on Court 1 to improve to 11-1 on the year and posted an immaculate 8-0 record in conference action. The pair has not dropped a match since Feb. 1 versus Oregon.

Despite dropping the doubles point, Saint Mary's steamrolled the Cougars (11-10, 4-5 WCC) in singles play and took four straight matches to win the contest.

Kozyreva won all but one game in her match on Court 1 to start the Gaels off on a good foot and the senior Clement would follow up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 slot. Abdelouahid picked up her second win of the day on Court 3 with another straight set win and Liesl Pieters delivered the final blow by battling through her first set en route to a 7-6(5), 6-2 win.

Saint Mary's finished tied for third in the conference standings with Gonzaga and will advance to the WCC Championship in Claremont, Calif. The first day of the tournament begins Thursday.
