MSOC | Engebretsen The Hero in 3-2 Overtime Win
9/13/2019 10:14:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Senior Anders Engebretsen scored the game-winning goal in extra time against CSU Bakersfield on Friday night.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — No. 7 Saint Mary's remained cool under pressure Friday night as they recovered from back-to-back goals by the Roadrunners to win the game off an Anders Engebretsen header in the 94th minute of play. The Gaels improved to 5-0 with the win and are now 24-0-5 through their last 29 matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
As he's done in every match this year, Engebretsen found a way to get on the scoresheet with his clutch 94th game-winning goal. The senior dribbled down the left endline and cut back to beat his defender, fired a severe angle shot, then immediately headed in the rebound into the far left netting to end the game and help Saint Mary's escape with the win.
Engebretsen came into the match leading the nation in points scored with 14 and added two more in the victory. He is just two scores away from tying his goal total from last year.
Saint Mary's struck first in the match as Jake Rudel scored his first of the season in the 28th minute on a blast from outside the box. The forward dribbled from the left side of the pitch across the top of the box and fired his ball into the upper right corner for the highlight reel tally.
The goal for the senior was a welcome sight after he led the conference in scoring last season and was a United Soccer Coaches All-American.
Lucas Andrews also tallied his first of the season during the 80th minute off a feed from Jakub Svehlik. Andrews made his run into the box and snuck his shot within the keeper and the left post to put SMC up comfortably with just 10 minutes to play.
The lead for Saint Mary's wouldn't last for long though as CSUB scored in the 84th minute after an unfortunate hand ball in the box led to a penalty kick and then tied the match exactly two minutes later when a deflected ball bounced off the post and in to force overtime.
The Gaels finished the match with nearly twice as many shots as the Runners, 19-10. Remi Prieur made one save in goal for SMC and picked up his fifth win of the season.

THOUGHTS FROM ADAM COOPER
- "It was nice to get Jake and Luke on the score sheet tonight. We were pretty unfortunate to give up the goals that we did but credit Bakersfield for fighting back."
- Saint Mary's heads to Sin City next week to play two matches against UNLV and Utah Valley. Links and more information can be found on the team's schedule page.
