Saint Mary's easily defeated the Mavericks on Monday for their second shutout of the season.
MORAGA, Calif. – No. 11 Saint Mary's (2-0) won in stunning fashion on Monday as they shutout Omaha (0-2) in a 4-0 victory for their second clean sheet of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sebastian Schacht got the ball rolling for the Gaels after he scored the first goal of the contest off a corner kick from Jakub Svehlik in the 23rd minute. Svehlik's corner snuck through a herd of players, but Schacht managed to strike the ball mid-air from close range for the goal.
After heading into the half up 1-0, Saint Mary's ramped up the offense in the final 45 minutes. Svehlik tallied the Gaels' second goal of the day after Anders Engebretsen fed him the ball and sent it flying into the back of the net in the 61st minute. Shortly after the play, SMC earned a 3-0 advantage when Valentin Sponer's throw-in bounced off an Omaha defender and ricocheted into the right side of the net during the 65th minute.
To add to the Gael's stellar offensive performance, Phillipe Van der Lof got in on the fun with a goal of his own in the 81st minute off an assist from Lucas Andrews and Younes Dayekh. Joseph Restani recorded four of the Gaels' 20 shots while Engebretsen was right behind with three.
Goalkeeper Remi Prieur tallied six saves during the matchup, five of which came in the second half of action. Saint Mary's dominated in the offensive half with 11 corner kicks while allowing just six and ceded only six shots during the contest.
