MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (7-8) earned their first shutout of the season on Tuesday as they defeated UC Davis in a 2-0 victory.
ON THE HILL
Ryan Taurek made his first collegiate start on Tuesday as he pitched six complete innings in the contest for his longest outing of the season. Taurek recorded six scoreless innings while not allowing a single hit from the Aggies until the top of the fifth inning. The freshman posted a career-high five strikeouts during his time on the mound. Liam Steigerwald entered the game in the top of the seventh to pitch in relief for Taurek before Jackson Hulett came in the top of the ninth to earn the save while striking out two batters. Saint Mary's only allowed a total of four hits from UC Davis which is the lowest amount of hits allowed by an opponent so far this season.
FROM THE BOX
Ryan Novis nailed the first single of the contest in the bottom of the first and later scored off a wild pitch to put the Gaels up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Jacob Talamante launched a double to left center in the bottom of the sixth to add the Gaels' second hit to the board. Following a sacrifice bunt from Novis, Talamante advanced to third and would score soon after courtesy of a sacrifice bunt from Christopher Campos to secure the second and final run of the game. Javi Espinosa tallied the third hit for Saint Mary's as he drilled an infield single to the pitcher.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will host Nevada tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the final contest of their nine-game homestand.
