WTEN | Saint Mary's Picks Up Win over Ranked Furman

MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels (7-4) came from behind on Wednesday to defeat Furman (13-4, 1-0 SoCon) and snap the Paladins' 11-match win streak. Aubane Ville secured the win in singles play by grinding out a three-set, tiebreaker match.
Furman took the doubles point with 6-2 wins on both courts 2 and 3. Mariia Kozyreva and Danielle McIntyre were locked up 5-5 in their match against the Paladins' #36 tandem of Adams/Kozarov before it was called.
Saint Mary's quickly retook the lead however with straight set wins by Lene Mari Hovda and Gabriela Tevez. Hovda defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1 as the No. 3 player while Tevez won 6-3, 6-2 as the No. 5.
Furman inched closer to claiming the match with three-set wins on courts 2 and 4 to go up 3-2. Saint Mary's responded with another win though as #21 Kozyreva came out on top against #16 Katarina Kozarov in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision on court 1 to tie up the match, 3-3.
The attention then moved to court 6 where Ville and Maggie Pate were locked up evenly in a third set. The final set went to a tiebreaker and required a few extra rallies, but Ville was able to win the set and match for the Gaels with a 9-7 score.
Saint Mary's will now travel to BYU for their first conference match this weekend. First serve on Saturday is at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
