MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's College Baseball has announced its 56-game schedule for the 2022 campaign. The Gaels upcoming season features 29 games against non-conference opponents, 27 matchups against West Coast Conference foes and 37 contests with teams from California.
"Our team and staff are excited about the 2022 baseball season," said head coach Greg Moore. "The players have invested throughout the fall preparing for a spring schedule that will not only challenge us in the non-conference, but for the WCC as well as possible post season action. We look forward to seeing all of our great fans back at 'The Giusto' this spring – our kids thrive off of their energy and appreciate their support."
Saint Mary's baseball slate is also highlighted by 11 games against teams that earned a spot in the NCAA Championship. Among those 11 games, the Gaels will go on the road to the east coast to battle East Carolina for a three-game road series (March 11-13).
SMC opens the 2022 campaign on the road against Big West opponent UC Davis on February 18. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Following that season-opening road series, the Gaels take on Cal State University Bakersfield during the midweek on February 22 in Bakersfield, Calif. and then head back to Moraga for the home-opening series against University of Northern Colorado from February 25-27.
The Gaels will then play 16 of their next 18 games on the road with trips to UC Riverside (March 4-6), LMU (March 18-20), and USD (March 25-27) with a few home games wedged in-between against UC Davis (March 1), and UCSB (March 22). UC Santa Barbara competed in the 2021 NCAA Championship a year ago.
On March 29, Saint Mary's will open up its local "Caldecott Series" with the University of California, Berkeley. The final game of the mid-week series with the CAL Bears will take place on April 11 at SMC. The Gaels will also travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to face Stanford (April 5) who participated in the 2021 College World Series.
SMC continues its conference slate by hosting BYU (March 31-April 1), and Pepperdine (April 8-10) for three-game series with each before hitting the road to rival Santa Clara (April 14-16) for a three-game series. The Gaels conference lineup also features home matchups with NCAA Regional participants Gonzaga (April 22-24), as well as the University of San Francisco (May 6-8)
Saint Mary's will conclude their conference schedule on the road against the University of Pacific (April 29-May 1), and the University of Portland (May 13-15). The Gaels have a non-conference series at home, as they welcome Cal State Northridge (May 19-21) for their final weekend series of the year.
The West Coast Conference Baseball Championship returns to Banner Island Field in Stockton, California, May 25-29. The winner of the conference tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The top 16 teams chosen by the NCAA tournament committee will be selected as regional hosts June 3-6 in a double-elimination format. The highest remaining seeds will then host a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series June 10-13 at eight team host sites.
The men's College World Series will be held June 16-26/27 at T.D. Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Gaels enter the spring in the hopes of building off their successful 2021 campaign where they saw Ky Bush selected in the second Round of the Major League draft by the Los Angeles Angels, just the fourth player in SMC history drafted in the first two rounds. In addition, Michael Hobbs (10th round, Los Angeles Dodgers) and Carlos Lomeli (17th round, Pittsburgh Pirates) were also taken on days two and three of the draft. The Gaels also had four players named to the All-Conference team in 2021 in Ky Bush, Jacob Talamante, Michael Hobbs, and Liam Steigerwald.
