SB | Saint Mary's Sweeps Sac State in Moraga

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's faced off with Sacramento State for the second consecutive weekend and swept the Hornets in two close contests at Cottrell Field. The Gaels improved to 4-2 on the season which is their best start through six games since the 2001 season.

GAME 1 RECAP
Saint Mary's 2, Sacramento State 1

The first game of the afternoon proved to be a pitching duel with the Gaels and Hornets combining for a total of just four hits.

Sac State got on the board first with a single run in the second off a 2-out base knock by Alondra Mejia. The run was not charged to SMC starting pitcher Sofia Earle however due to an error earlier in the inning.

Saint Mary's did not have much traction on the base paths heading into the bottom of the sixth but that quickly changed as Marissa Montelongo delivered a 2-out double down the left field line to score pinch runner Bry Waters and tie up the game. Jayda Alaan was the Gaels' next batter and hit a spinning grounder off the end of the bat that ate up the Hornets' second baseman and allowed Montelongo to score on the fielding error.

Sofia Earle dazzled in the circle for Saint Mary's and threw a one-hit complete game. The lefty continued to pad her strikeout numbers by sending down 11 Hornets via the K and walked just three as well.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 3, Sacramento State 2

The Hornets once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second contest of the day thanks to a second inning run. It didn't take long for SMC to tie things up however as Montelongo drove in Holly Lusk from third with an infield single in the bottom of the third. The hit for Lusk was the first of her career -- a double to centerfield.

Saint Mary's then scored two more in the following inning. Indya Smith got the rally started with a double to right field to chase Waters, the pinch runner, to third with no outs. Julia McCormack then laid down a clever squeeze bunt to score Waters while McCormack reached safely at first. Angelina Franco was the next batter up and she also put down a squeeze bunt to beat the defense and score Smith.

The Hornets added another run in the fifth and had the bases loaded but Earle entered in relief and managed to get her batter to foul out to end the threat. Earle pitched the final 2.1 innings for SMC and struck out the side in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Kayla Scott started on the rubber for the Gaels and threw three innings and gave up just one earned run. Eryn McCoy earned the win in relief and pitched 1.2 frames.
