SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Saint Mary's (2-6) came up short against Fresno State (9-2) on the second day of the Golden Gate Invitational in a 4-2 loss.
The Gaels had an impressive start to the match as they came back in doubles to win the final two sets and claim the doubles point. After falling on Court 3, SMC's top tandem of James Watt and Boris Reckow scratched out a 6-4 win and then Damon Kesaris and Fabian Roensdorf combined for a 7-5 win on Court 2 to claim the point.
No. 23 Kesaris put SMC up 2-0 with a speedy 6-1, 6-0 decision against the Bulldogs' top player Zdenek Derkas but then Fresno State won the next four singles matches to win the contest. James Watt put up a fight in both of his sets in the No. 2 slot but fell 4-6, 4-6.
Saint Mary's concludes the Invitational tomorrow against Nevada. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m.
