MORAGA, Calif. — No. 22 Saint Mary's faced Gonzaga for their second conference match of the season on Sunday and came away with a 2-0 win due to a pair of first-half goals. The Gaels are now 1-0-1 in West Coast Conference play and 3-0-1 overall.
SMC secured their fourth shutout of the year by limiting the Bulldogs to just two shots on goal in the entire match. Saint Mary's did well to keep the ball out of their defense by allowing only one Bulldogs corner kick as well.
Lucas Andrews broke through with the first score of the game in the 20th minute after freshman Christian Engmann threw the ball in just a few feet away from the corner flag. Boyd Curry got a head on the throw-in and flicked it over to Andrews who tapped the shot in for his first goal this season.
Saint Mary's doubled their lead just before halftime off a set piece from near midfield. After a Gonzaga foul, Sebastian Schacht sent a cross into the box that was deflected by a Bulldog defender and popped over to Andre Hoglin who fully extended his left leg to sneak the ball just inside the left post. The goal came just 11 seconds before the intermission and was the first career goal for Hoglin.
Andrews led the Gaels with three shots on goal as part of a 13-shot performance by the offense. Saint Mary's had plenty of quality scoring chances as evidenced by their 10 shots on goal. GU managed just eight shots in the contest.
The match proved to be physical game with 28 fouls called between the two teams and four cautions issued. Gonzaga received three yellow cards compared to just one for SMC.
UP NEXT: SANTA CLARA
The Gaels will travel to Santa Clara next Sunday for their next West Coast Conference match. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
