MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's wraps up their season this weekend with a road trip down to Los Angeles to take on Loyola Marymount. The first game of the series takes place on Friday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday at noon.
The Gaels are 12-22 this year and 3-6 in West Coast Conference play. Saint Mary's is coming off a home series against San Diego last weekend where they went 1-2 against the Toreros in three close contests.
SMC has not given up more than three runs in any of their last six contests and will look to keep up their strong pitching against the Lions. Eileen Perez was named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday after throwing 10.1 innings in the team's series against USD while giving up only one run. The Gaels' other main starter, Sofia Earle, has a 2.85 ERA in 103 innings this season and leads the conference in strikeout rate.
The Lions are 20-20 this year but 8-4 in WCC games putting them second in the conference standings. LMU has played their best on their home turf at Smith Field where they own a 10-5 record.
Loyola Marymount will likely lean on grad transfer pitcher Marina Vitalich during the series who has started 22 games in the circle this season. The former George Washington product has a 2.17 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in over 145 innings during her first year in LA. Offensively, the Lions are led by senior Andrea Gonzalez who has a team-best .299 batting average and 12 extra-base knocks in 2021.
