WBB | Rough Second Quarter Keeps Gaels From Taking Down Kansas
11/26/2022 5:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball got off to a good start against the Kansas Jayhawks, but hit a rough stretch in the second quarter which led to a 73-53 loss on Saturday afternoon.
SMC (3-3) and KU (5-0) were all tied at 12-12 late in the first quarter before a three pointer by Kansas made it 15-12 Jayhawks in the final minute, which was the only difference in the quarter.
But the big momentum swing in the game occurred with just under six minutes left in the first half, when a Taycee Wedin three pointer was waved off after review that showed the shot clock had expired before she released it.
And that's where things began to snowball on SMC, when the Gaels were down by just one point. Kansas would go on an 18-0 run to close out the half, leaving SMC stuck on 16 points as they trailed 36-17 at the break, losing the second quarter 20-5.
The Gaels held server from there, tying the Jayhawks in the third quarter and losing the fourth by just one, but weren't able to get the deficit below 15 after an Ali Bamberger layup with six minutes left in the game cut it to 59-44 and led the Jayhawks to call a time out.
Saint Mary's only lost the rebounding battle by four to a big Kansas team, but shot just 33.3% from the field as the Jayhawks made their presence felt defensively.
Bamberger's 12 points led the team, and Hannah Rapp's career-high 10 rebounds also led the Gaels, as well as tied for the game high. Aspen Garrison finished with nine points and Makena Mastora finished with eight to round out SMC's top scorers. Taycee Wedin was held scoreless for the first time since February 17 of last season at Gonzaga.
