WBB | Five Players in Double-Figures as Gaels Cruise to 27-Point Home Victory over Redhawks
2/16/2026 5:02:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team cruised to an 86-59 victory in a rare President's Day matinee inside University Credit Union Pavilion. The Gaels' offense erupted for a season high 86 points to power Saint Mary's to its 15th win of the season and sixth in conference play.
Five Gaels scored in double-figures for the first time this season, including a game-high 13 points from Abigail Shoff for Saint Mary's (15-12, 6-8 WCC). Shoff has now scored in double-figures in six straight games and leads the team with 8.9 points per game. Malia Latu was the other SMC starter in double-figures with 11 points on 4-5 shooting. Off the bench, Charlece Ohiaeri (10 points), Melesungu Afeaki (11 points) and Addi Wedin (12 points) all had double-digit points as the Gaels outscored Seattle U 43-14 in bench points.
The win lifted Saint Mary's into a tie with Pepperdine for seventh place in the conference standings. With four games left in the regular season, the Gaels are now just two games back of sixth place as teams jockey for seeding in the 2026 Credit Union 1 WCC Basketball Championship, which runs from March 5-10 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the dominant 27-point victory, the Gaels overcame a quiet start as Seattle U opened on a 7-0 run, prompting a critical early timeout from SMC head coach Jeff Cammon. The Redhawks led by as many as ten in the opening period but the Gaels did a good job of slowing the game down and getting to the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 from the strip to make it a four-point game at the break.
Saint Mary's made its move in the second quarter, outscoring the Redhawks 28-10 and shooting 80% from the field for one of their best scoring quarters of the season. The Gaels led by as many as 14 in the quarter and went on a 12-0 scoring run to start the quarter, eventually taking a 23-17 lead. Abigail Shoff had six points in the quarter as well as a pair of made three-pointers from Ella Wedin. Melesungu Afeaki converted a layup through contact off a great dime from Amy Kurkowski to give Saint Mary's a 41-27 lead at the half.
Shoff remained hot going into the third quarter, scoring another seven points to finish with her team high 13 points. The Gaels held Seattle to just 33% shooting and 1-for-10 from three-point range in the quarter, remaining as one of the best perimeter defending teams in the WCC. The lead ballooned to as many as 29 points later in the fourth quarter but the Gaels would get some good bench play to help close out the game and seal the 86-59 victory.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's improved to 15-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play after its 86-59 victory over Seattle U on Monday afternoon. The Gaels will remain in the Bay Area and take on Santa Clara in the Leavey Center on Thursday before returning to Moraga for Senior Day on Saturday against San Francisco.
