LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's Women's Basketball got off to a good start against the Kansas Jayhawks, but hit a rough stretch in the second quarter which led to a 73-53 loss on Saturday afternoon. SMC and KU were all tied at 12-12 late in the first quarter before a three pointer by Kansas made it 15-12 Jayhawks in the final minute, which was the only difference in the quarter.

But a big momentum swing in the game occurred with just under six minutes left in the first half, when a Taycee Wedin three pointer was waved off after review that showed the shot clock had expired before she released it.

And that's where things began to snowball on SMC, when the Gaels were down by just one point. Kansas would go on an 18-0 run to close out the half, leaving SMC stuck on 16 points as they trailed 36-17 at the break, losing the second quarter 20-5.

The Gaels held server from there, tying the Jayhawks in the third quarter and losing the fourth by just one, but weren't able to get the deficit below 15 after an Ali Bamberger layup with six minutes left in the game cut it to 59-44 and led the Jayhawks to call a time out.

Saint Mary's only lost the rebounding battle by four to a big Kansas team, but shot just 33.3% from the field as the Jayhawks made their presence felt defensively.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
Jada Holland currently leads the team in scoring at 12 points per game, with her season-high 20 points coming against UTEP. Marisa Davis-Jones currently leads the team in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per game with two double doubles on the season. SJSU is currently causing 18.3 turnovers per game, while scoring just under 18 points per game off turnovers.

The Spartans added 10 new players to their roster for the 2022-23 season as they look to retool their roster under new Head Coach April Phillips, who is in her first season as a head coach, but her assistant coaching history includes previous stops at Texas, University of Arizona, Cal, LMU, Georgia Tech, and New Haven.

Phillips started her playing career at Georgia Tech, earning time in 26 games for the Yellow Jackets during the 2005-06 campaign. She transferred to Xavier where she played basketball and competed in track & field.

She was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference third team her senior season and helped Xavier to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two Atlantic 10 titles. As a senior in 2010, Phillips held lead the Musketeers to a 30-4 record and the NCAA Elite Eight, eventually losing 55-53 to No. 2 Stanford to fall just short of the first Final Four appearance in program history.

The Gaels are a perfect 10-0 in their history against San Jose State, and will look to keep that streak going.

ABOUT UC DAVIS
The Aggies were picked to finish fifth in the league standings in the Big West, two points back of Long Beach State in third place and one point behind UC San Diego in fourth place. Hawaii sits atop the coaches' poll with nine of the 11 first-place votes and 99 points overall, followed by UC Santa Barbara.

UC Davis junior guard Evanne Turner was named to the coach's preseason All-Big West team. The 2022 All-Big West Honorable Mention is coming off her best season, starting all 28 games for the Aggies last year, averaging 12.6 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game in over 32 minutes per game. The native of Fontana, Calif. set career-highs in points, assists, steals and three-pointer averages while missing just four three throws all season.

The Aggies advanced to the semifinal of the Big West Conference Tournament last season after winning it all the previous year. Saint Mary's is 9-9 all time versus UC Davis, including two-straight wins over the Aggies in the past two seasons.
