MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball extended the program's best start to 7-0 after an 18-1 defeat of the Northern Colorado Bears on Sunday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
The Gaels wasted no time attacking the Bears on Sunday afternoon, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first when SMC's aggressiveness on the bases produced two runs. A double steal with Nick Mistone and Christopher Campos led to Campos scoring from third when the throw to second to get Mistone was offline, Mistone came around to score when the throw home to get Campos was errant. Kyle Velazquez doubled down the line and that scored Chris Santiago who singled and it was 3-0 Gaels when the dust settled in the bottom of the first.
Saint Mary's tacked on two more immediately after that in the bottom of the second when Campos hit a two-run shot into almost the exact same spot to left field he hit his – and the team's – first home run of the season yesterday to make if 5-0 SMC.
The Gaels scored two more runs in the third when Seth Nager singled in Kyle Velazquez and Gavin Napier plated Dalton Mashore for a 7-0 Gaels lead. Christian Almanza singled in Nager in the fifth to make it 8-0 Gaels and then Chris Santiago hit a no-doubt solo shot to left to make it 9-0 Saint Mary's. The Gaels would score four more runs in the inning off RBI hits from Hayden Driggs, Coleman Schmidt, an error at third off a ball put in play by Blake McDonald, and an RBI groundout by Hunter Hirayama and it was 14-0 Gaels at the end of the sixth.
A Blake Mann single made it 15-0 when he drove in Nathan Chong in the seventh. The Gaels capped off their scoring in the eighth when Ryan O'Neil drove in McDonald, a Jonathan Stone walk with the bases loaded plated Hirayama, and Riley Lamb singled to score Javy Espinoza to round out the 18 runs for the Gaels.
Conner Roberts got his second win of the season in second start of the year going six shutout innings with no walks and nine strikeouts on just one hit for the quality start, though the De La Salle High product did hit three batters. Preston Howey, Casey Candiotti, and Octavio Corona each pitched an inning to close it out for the Gaels.
The Gaels topped their highest output for runs in a four-game series by scoring 51 runs over the four games, topping their 50 runs scored in a four-game set with Utah Valley in 2015.
UP NEXT
The Gaels will play a single game with UC Davis on Tuesday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field to round out the four games they'll play against the Aggies this season.
