BASE | Eighth Inning Rally Gives USD Game Three

SAN DIEGO – The Toreros pulled away in the eighth to sweep the Gaels on Sunday in an 11-6 loss for Saint Mary's. The game was tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the eighth before a late rally for USD.

The Gaels allowed five runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the eighth. It was just one error committed by SMC, but the runs all scored after two outs when there should have been three, and anything that occurs after that point is scored as unearned. It was the second time this season Saint Mary's allowed five unearned runs in a late inning after happened in the bottom of the seventh at LMU last Sunday.

Saint Mary's struck first as they often have this year, but San Diego always had an answer for the Gaels on Sunday. In the first Chris Santiago singled to right drive in Christopher Campos for SMC's first run of the day. A Blake Mann ground out plated Nathan Chong and a Trey Winget groundout scored Christian Almanza for a 3-0 Gaels lead.

The scoring came in sets of three for both teams early on. The Toreros would answer with three runs in the second and the Gaels would score three more in the fifth on a Santiago double, another Winget RBI fielder's choice, and Dalton Mashore reaching on an error.

Almanza and Santiago each went 2 for 4 and scored a run, with Santiago driving in a pair as well. Campos and Chong each scored twice and Trey Winget recorded his first two RBI. Conner Roberts got the start and pitched four innings allowing three runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
