MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's took an early lead against BYU, but the Cougars took over from there and won 12-2 over the Gaels on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
Â
The Gaels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when
Blake Mann walked with one out.
Javy Espinoza singled on a line drive off of the second base umpire and
Dalton Mashore sent a hot shot down the left field line that the third baseman couldn't handle to drive in
Blake Mann for the Gaels the first run of the game. That was followed by
Hayden Driggs bloop single into right field to score Espinoza and it was 2-0 SMC.
Â
But the Gaels would be stuck on the two runs for the rest of the game. BYU third baseman Austin Deming hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a solo shot in the sixth. The Cougars would score in bunches of threes, getting three runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth.
Â
The Gaels were able to put together a couple hits in the eighth from
Nathan Chong and
Coleman Schmidt but were never able to put a rally together.
