BASE | Zags Take Late Lead to Escape With Win

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Baseball battled No. 12 Gonzaga on Sunday and led 2-1 in the seventh inning of the rubber match before the Zags broke through for a 4-2 win over the Gaels.

Ryan Wiltse had a career night for Saint Mary's going 6.1 innings on 105 pitches allowing just two runs and striking out seven with only one walk.

The Zags were able to string some hits together against the Gaels bullpen to escape Moraga with their perfect record of no series lost this season still intact. Gonzaga got a run in the first from their number three and four hitters with two outs, getting out to a 1-0 lead.

But Saint Mary's went ahead in the fifth inning when Nick Mistone singled to start the frame before Blake Mann doubled to the wall in right center to score Mistone all the way from first.

Coleman Schmidt laid down a bunt to get Mann to third, which is where the Zags tried to throw out the Gaels right fielder but he was able to slide under the tag. Marc Goulart drove a ball to center for a sacrifice fly that plated Mann and Gaels were on top 2-1.

It would stay that way until the seventh when Wiltse issued his first walk of the night. Nathan Schneider was a bit a wild and allowed a couple of base hits on ground balls that got through that tied the game at 2-2. A sac fly gave the Zags the lead before Jack Snook came in to end the threat. The Zags would go add an insurance run in the eighth on another sacrifice fly.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Gavin Napier extended his on base streak to seven games with another base hit. Mann recorded his 10th RBI of the season. The 6.1 innings and 105 pitches were career highs for Wiltse and he tied his high in strikeouts.
