

WBB | Clair Steele Comes Home to Join the Gaels

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball has added grad student transfer, and Orinda, Calif. native, Clair Steele for the 2022-23 season.
Steele is transferring from Lehigh University where she amassed 269 assists over her four-year career in exactly 100 games played with 38 starts. In her senior season alone, she racked up 131 assists to just 33 turnovers to lead the Patriot league - and the nation - in assist-to-turnover ratio.
The true point guard led the Patriot league in assists per game in her junior and senior seasons with 4.4 apg as a junior and 5.5 apg as a senior for the top scoring team in the league last season. She led the team as a junior in steals per game (1.5) and averaged a team-high 31.4 minutes per contest.
Steele played her high school basketball at Miramonte High for coach Kelly Sopak, where she played in all 134 games in her high school career and averaged 16.9 points per game, 5.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game as a senior. She served as team captain for two seasons and helped lead the Matadors to four league championships and an overall record of 120-14 during her career.
Steele earned multiple accolades over her very successful high school career, as she was a four-time All Diablo Athletic League Selection, including two First Team honors in 2016-17 and 2017-18. She was also named to the San Francisco Chronicle Second Team All-Metro, All-Bay Area News Group Second Team, and Third Team All-NorCal by SportsStars in 2017-18.
The Miramonte star also excelled in the classroom where she had a 4.2 GPA as a senior, earning All-DAL Academic Honors in her senior year as well.
