BASE | Another 3-2 Win for Gaels Over the Dons

MORAGA, Calif. – For the second-straight day Saint Mary's Baseball defeated the University of San Francisco 3-2 on seven hits, this time in comeback fashion.

The Gaels led 1-0 when the Dons got a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, but the Gaels answered in the bottom of the eighth.

Dalton Mashore checked into the game defensively in the seventh, and came up to bat with two on and two out in the eighth. Kyle Velazquez doubled to start the inning followed by a Coleman Schmidt walk. The Dons retired the next two batters before Mashore stepped to the plate.

The freshman ripped the first pitch he saw down into the left field corner and Velazquez and Schmidt both came in to score to put Saint Mary's up 3-2.

Nathan Schneider worked a perfect ninth to put away USF and collect his third save of the season. SMC got another good start from Conner Roberts, who went 5.2 innings allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. Roberts did walk four batters and hit two, keeping him from going deeper into the game, but he did not allow a run.

Saint Mary's scored first when Gavin Napier doubled in Trey Winget for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. That would remain the score until the Dons seventh-inning homer, with each team stranding nine base runners on the day.

The Gaels had bases-loaded opportunities in the first and fifth innings, and had a runner thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth. The Dons loaded the bases in the third and the only innings they didn't strand runners were after the home run in the seventh and in the eighth and ninth innings.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Gaels are now 13-0 when they hold their opponent to two runs or less and are 11-4 when they don't commit an error.

Chris Santiago extended his on-base streak to nine games with a single in the first. Napier hit his ninth double and drove in 20th run of the season. Mashore hit his sixth double and drove in his 16th and 17th runs of the season.

UP NEXT
The series finale with the Dons is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels will honor the moms of the team before the game with a group ceremonial first pitch.
