Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – After battling the Iowa Hawkeyes yesterday, the Gaels took on the Oregon Ducks Sunday afternoon. Despite a handful of strong performances from SMC, Oregon was able to keep them at distance, winning the match 5-2.
DIFFICULT DOUBLES
The Gaels and Ducks faced off on the doubles courts to start the day's action.
Olivia Rook and
Madison Weekley set the tempo, battling Oregon's Lillian Mould and Karin Young. The SMC pairing were tested, as the duck's duo tried to force a late comeback. Weekley and and Rook held firm, winning the match 6-4.
Jordan Harris and
Lene Mari Hovda took on Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral. Although the experienced Gaels duo got off to a quick start, the Oregon pairing established their serves and took control of the match, winning 6-3.
The double's point hinged on the third match between SMC's
Stefanie Silva and
Tian Yu Dong and Oregon's Ares Teixido Garcia and Jo-Yee Chan. Both teams fought hard, but it was the Ducks pairing that came out on top, winning the match 6-4 and clinching the double's point for Oregon.
TENSE SINGLES
On the single's side, the Gaels played well, but were ultimately unable to slow down the Ducks.
Olivia Rook dominated her match from start to finish, beating Myah Petchey 6-1, 6-2.
Jordan Harris took on Sophie Luescher, who quickly jumped out to a lead, winning the first set 6-2. Harris was unfazed, bouncing back to win the second set 6-4. The two went to a tiebreak, and Harris was not to be denied, winning the tiebreak 10-7 and clinching the point for Gaels.
Oregon's Ares Teixido Garcia bested
Lene Mari Hovda, as Hovda was unable to establish her serve. Garcia went on to win the match 6-1, 6-2.
Tian Yu Dong played Uxia Martinez Moral who bested the Gael 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman
Madison Weekley battled Jo-Yee Chan. Chan won the first set, but Weekley was able to rebound in the second, winning the first three games. Despite the quick start to the set, the Oregon player quickly bounced back, winning the match 6-1, 6-3.
Stefanie Silva put up a tough fight against Karin Young, as Silva forced the Oregon player to win the first set in a tiebreak 7-5. The second set went back and forth, but Young kept Silva at a distance, winning the match 6-4.
