MORAGA, Calif. – On a nice sunny day in Moraga, the SMC Women's Tennis team struggled to get off the mark as the visiting San Diego Toreros took advantage to beat the Gaels 4-0.
OFF THE MARK
The Gaels looked to get off on the front foot in the doubles matches, but their opponents were ready, and SMC paid the price.
In the #1 match,
Jordan Harris and
Lene Mari Hovda took on San Diego's Solymar Colling and Kailey Evans. The away pairing was leading 4-3 when the match was abandoned.
Iman Khan and
Olivia Rook faced off against Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride. The Toreros duo were taken much to muster, as the SMC pairing lost the match 6-2.
In the third match,
Tian Yu Dong and
Madison Weekley took on Elizabeth Goldsmith and Filippa Bruu-Syversen. Dong and Weekley started well enough, but the San Diego pairing was unphased, as they came back to win the match 6-2, clinching the doubles point for the Toreros.
UNLUCKY SINGLES
The Gaels suffered a similar fate on the singles side, as the away team quickly jumped out to lead and never looked back. Three of the six singles matches were abandoned after the Toreros clinched the 4-0 victory.
In the #5 match,
Tian Yu Dong was unable to fight her way into the match. San Diego's Jordyn McBride didn't give Dong a chance to breath as she won the match 6-2, 6-0.
Her freshman teammate
Madison Weekley took on the Torero's Filippa Bruu-Syversen and suffered a similar fate. Bruu-Syversen controlled from the onset as she beat SMC's Weekley 6-3, 6-0.
In the #2 match,
Lene Mari Hovda faced off against Elizabeth Goldsmith. The San Diego player won the first set 6-0 before Hovda battled back in the second. The set was tied 5-5 when the match was abandoned.
Olivia Rook faced off against #86 Abigail Desiatnikov in the #3 match. Desiatnikov won the first set 6-4 and was leading the second 5-0 when the match was called off.
Freshman
Iman Khan was in the midst of a three-set battle when her match was called off. Khan faced off against San Diego's Kailey Evans, who's ranked at #63 in the women's singles standings.
Evans took the opening set 6-2, before Khan bounced back in the second to win 6-2 herself. The match was all square at 2-2 in the third set when the match was abandoned.
Jordan Harris tried her best to hang with Claudia De Las Heras, but the San Diego player was able to just Harris at bay in both sets, winning 6-3, 6-4. The win clinched the overall victory for the away team as well.
