MORAGA, Calif. – It was another sunny day in Moraga for as the SMC Women's Tennis team battled the BYU Cougars in the regular season finale.
The Gaels left it all out on the courts today, but BYU held SMC at bay as the visitors won 4-2.
SENIOR DAY
Three Gaels celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, as
Jordan Harris,
Lene Mari Hovda, and
Gabriela Tevez were all honored before the matches got underway. All three players leave their mark on the program and left it all out on the courts this afternoon.
CLOSE DOUBLES
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead on the doubles courts but the Gaels battled hard for the point.
It was only fitting that
Jordan Harris and her doubles partner
Lene Mari Hovda went out with a win on their home court. Taking on Emilee Astle and Jacque Dunyon, the SMC duo cut through the Cougars pairing to win 6-4 on their last doubles match on Korth Courts.
In the #2 match,
Iman Khan and
Olivia Rook faced off against the Cougars Yujia Huang and Tina Li. Khan and Rook started well but were unable to keep pace as they fell to the BYU team 6-3.
The doubles point hinged on the #3 match, and it was the visitors that came out on top, as SMC's
Stefanie Silva and
Tian Yu Dong faced BYU's Kara Wheatley and Helen Jiao. Silva and Dong played good tennis but came up short in the end to lose 6-2.
TENSE SINGLES
The single's matches followed soon after, as the Gaels look to bounce back after the Cougars claimed the opening doubles point.
Jordan Harris couldn't keep pace with Yujia Huang, as the BYU player was able to keep Harris off balance the whole match, claiming match 1, 6-3, 6-2.
Harris' doubles partner
Lene Mari Hovda was all business as she went out with a bang in her final singles match. Facing off against BYU's Emilee Astle, Hovda played strong tennis in the first to win 6-2, and was then tested in the second as she dug deep to win 7-5.
Freshman
Iman Khan took on the Cougars Jacque Dunyon. Khan gave the BYU player a run in the first set, as Dunyon had to win the first 6-6, but ultimately Khan couldn't keep pace as Dunyon won the second 6-3 as well.
Olivia Rook couldn't quite disrupt BYU's Tina Li, as Li was able to fend off Rook in both sets, winning 6-4 in each.
Tian Yu Dong was engaged in a tough three set match against Helen Jiao. After winning the first set in a 7-6, tiebreak, Dong was looking to do the same in the second set as the pair were tied 6-6. Unfortunately, Dong wasn't able to snatch the win as the match was abandoned.
The visitors claimed victory in the #6 match, as SMC's
Stefanie Silva faced off against Emmie Moore. Despite taking the BYU player to a tiebreak in both sets, Silva came up short twice as the BYU player won 7-6, 7-5.
