MORAGA, Calif. – After a rainy March forced the match to be rescheduled, SMC Women's Tennis finally took the courts against the UC Davis Aggies on a sunny Thursday in Moraga.
Â
Despite some strong individual performances from the Gaels, they were unable to catch up to the Aggies as the visitors were able to hold on for a 4-2 victory.Â
Â
NARROW DOUBLES
The doubles matches were a tight contest, as the Gaels and Aggies fought for each game as the doubles point came down to the wire.
Â
In the #1 match,
Jordan Harris and
Lene Mari Hovda bounced back from their Pepperdine performance last week with a confident victory. The experienced SMC duo took on the Aggies pairing of Yana Gurevich and nArianna Stavropoulos, holding off a late charge to win 6-4.Â
Â
The freshman pairing of
Iman Khan and
Madison Weekley were unable to get going in the #2 match against Davis'Â Lauren Ko and Daisy Maunupau. The Aggies duo went onto to win the match 6-1.
Â
With the doubles point hanging in the balance, SMC'sÂ
Olivia Rook and
Tian Yu Dong took on the Aggies pairing of Michelle Zell and Carly Schwartzberg. Rook and Dong got off to a great start, but the Aggies wouldn't go down without a fight, as they slowly clawed their way back into the game. Despite the Gael's best efforts, Davis had the momentum, and were able to complete the comeback to win the match 7-5, clinching the crucial doubles point in the process.Â
Â
LENGTHY SINGLES
After the doubles point narrowly escaped the Gaels, SMC looked to establish the tempo early in singles try and mount a comeback.Â
Â
Iman Khan and
Lene Mari Hovda brought their A-game to UC Davis, as both Gaels played dominant singles tennis. Hovda faced off against Arianna Stavropoulos and never let the Aggies player get within striking distance, winning the match 6-3, 6-3.Â
Â
Iman Khan went to battle against the Aggies Kaia Wolfe, as the young Gael had to work hard in the clinch victory. The first set was tricky, as Khan was forced to win in a tiebreak. After clinching the set 7-5, the momentum was on her side, and she took advantage, winning the second set 6-1 and clinching the match victory with it.
Â
Khan and Hovda were the only Gaels to win their singles matches, but a handful of SMC players played some solid tennis as well.Â
Â
Tian Yu Dong and
Madison Weekley had a tough time getting off the mark, as their opponents were able to keep the young Gaels at bay. UC Davis' Daisy Maunupau would beat Dong 6-4, 6-3, while Kristina Evloeva was able to beat Weekley 6-2, 6-3.Â
Â
The other two singles matches both took three sets to decide the winner, as
Olivia Rook and
Jordan Harris both played great tennis but were unable to get the victories. Rook took on Michelle Zell while Harris faced off against Yana Gurevich.
Â
After dropping the first set 6-4, Rook bounced back in the second 6-4 to tie the match at one set a piece. The third set was tense, as both players went back and forth. Unfortunately, with the set tied at 6-6, the match was unable to victory due to an untimely injury.
Â
Jordan Harris' match was full of quality tennis, as she stormed out to a lead in the first set, winning 7-6. Her opponent refused to go away without a fight, as the Aggies player won the second set 6-4, before following up to win the third 6-0.Â
