WBB | Gaels Win Streak Against Broncos Snapped in Loss at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball battled against Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon, but the Broncos quelled the Gaels comeback attempts in a 70-58 loss at the Leavey Center, ending their win streak against SCU at five games.
The Gaels trailed by 11 early on, but Ali Bamberger kept the Broncos from getting any further ahead with a seven-point first quarter by going 3 for 4 from the field, including 1 for 2 on threes.
The Broncos would go up by 13 at one point in the second quarter, but a three by Makena Mastora and a jumper by Hanna Rapp kept to nine at the half.
Santa Clara would start the second half on a 7-0 run, however, to take a 38-22 lead just three minutes into the third. The Broncos would lead by as many as 19 with just over two minutes to go in the third, but SMC would fight back.
A 9-0 run for Saint Mary's was capped by a Leia Hanafin 3-pointer to cut the deficit to eight with 6:23 left to play. The Broncos went back up by 14 with 3:37 remaining, but Hanafin would do it again with just under two minutes left when she hit a three to make it a 62-54 game with 1:55 to go.
But the Broncos would keep the Gaels at arm's length on continue their hot shooting, never letting SMC get any closer than eight points to close out the win.

Hanafin set career highs in three pointers with four, doubling her previous single-game high on her way to a career-high 12 points. Bamberger led the Gaels with 15 points.
Santa Clara was 7 of 13 on threes in the second half (53.8%), 12 of 27 (44.4%) for the game, and 24 of 52 (46.2%) from the floor. The Gaels were 9 of 24 (37.5%) from deep and 20 of 52 (38.5%) from the field on the day. Saint Mary's committed just one more turnover than the Broncos, but were out rebounded 36-23.
