WTEN | Gaels Stay At Home To Take On Portland And Gonzaga

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Women's Tennis team will be staying in Moraga to take on Portland on Friday and Gonzaga on Saturday.

The Gaels began Conference play as they defeated the Tigers 4-1, as UOP was on a four game win streak.
The doubles point was a back and forth battle, but Saint Mary's came out on top to clinch the point with Stefanie Silva and Sofia Daryaie taking down Tigers duo Liza Mladentseva and Indiya Mcleod, 7-6 (7-3) win.
Not only did Silva help the Gaels clinch the doubles point, but she gave them a 2-0 lead after deafening Mladentseva 6-1, 6-3 in the singles. UOP won the next set, giving them their only point of the match.
Olivia Rook outlasted her opponent Indiya Mcleod 6-4, 6-1 and Juliette Daries closed off the Gaels 4-1 win defeating Megan Carmichael 6-2, 7-5.
ABOUT PORTLAND
Portland was picked to finish fifth in the 2024 West Coast Conference Preseason Poll. The Pilots took on Gonzaga to open up their WCC play, where they fell short by a point. Portland is currently on a two game lose streak this season, but are 4-0 when competing at home. Throughout the season the Pilots have swept a total of four teams, Seattle University, Bryant, Montana State, and Montana.
ABOUT GONZAGA
Gonzaga is coming out of a 2023-2024 winning season of an overall record of 13-11. The Bulldogs closed out last season competing against the Gaels with a 4-2 win and falling short to Portland 2-5. In recent matches, Emily Robertson has earned the Bulldogs their single match points, along with Tiegan Aitken who has earned Gonzaga double points, and single match points.
