MSOC | Gaels Record Season High 16 Shots but Fall 1-0 to Pacific
10/11/2025 5:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's returned to Moraga and put up a season high 16 shots including six on frame but failed to come away with the win. Pacific converted a penalty in the 59th minute to go down as the eventual game-winner as the Tigers recorded their first win in WCC play.
The Gaels had five players with multiple shot attempts throughout the 90 minutes including a team high three shots from Bastian Toelhoej. Luke Hoelting also hit the frame twice and had one of the team's best chances on goal in the 82nd minute. Saint Mary's will have another shot at their first conference win next Wednesday as they host Santa Clara to conclude their two-game home stand.
FIRST HALF 0-0 PAC
Pacific dictated ball possession for the bulk of the first half and had some dangerous moments in transition. The Gaels physicality started to play a role though as they forced several turnovers to create transition moments.
Saint Mary's outshot Pacific 6-5 over the first 45 minutes and both keepers made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.
FINAL SMC 0-1 PAC
Things intensified in the second half as Pacific's wingers started going at the Gaels outside backs in one-v-one scenarios. Their efforts eventually paid off as they earned a penalty kick in the 59th minute with a chance to go up 1-0. SMC keeper Sam Bentley guessed the right way but the shot attempt from Luca Baltzer would find the bottom left corner for his third of the season.
Saint Mary's responded well though, generating the majority of the chances down the final stages of the game. Several players had dangerous shot attempts in and around the 18-yard box including Bastian Toelhoej, Luke Hoelting, TJ Dilley and Jaydon Whittaker. Tigers keeper Milo Risenhoover recorded a game high five saves en route to their first conference win of the season.
In the 82nd minute, Kayvon Monfared and Luke Hoelting would link up off a free kick as Hoelting collected the return pass in a dangerous area inside the penalty box. Hoelting took a touch and rifled a shot to the near post but Risenhoover did well to cover his right corner and make the save.
Hubert Deragon, Jona Starek and Fynn Allmon played all 90 minutes for the Gaels while Bentley finished with two saves in goal.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's fell to 0-5-5 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play after their 1-0 defeat to Pacific. The Gaels are back in action on Wednesday, October 22nd as they host Santa Clara at 3:00 PM. Tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets and the match can be streamed live on ESPN+.
