Tigers Down Gaels with PK in 59th Minute…
Saint Mary's put up a season high 16 shots but failed to find the back of the net as Pacific left Moraga with their first win of the conference season. The Tigers were awarded a penalty in the 59th minute and even though SMC keeper Sam Bentley dove the right way, the shot still found the bottom left corner to put Pacific ahead with 30 minutes to play.
The Gaels responded well though with continuous pressure for the rest of the game, generating several chances inside the 18-yard box. Just a minute after Pacific's goal, Saint Mary's had a shot attempt flash across the face of goal from midfielder Jaydon Whittaker. They nearly tied it up again in the 82nd minute with a shot attempt inside the box from forward Luke Hoelting. The Tigers keeper made a terrific reaction save, blocking the near-post shot to help preserve the lead.
Hubert Deragon, Fynn Allmon and Jona Starek played all 90 minutes while five different players had multiple shot attempts on the afternoon.
90-Minute Soldiers…
Throughout a grueling and challenging college soccer season, every team needs their 90-minute warriors to eat minutes and keep the level of play high game in and game out. For Saint Mary's, those players are Fynn Allmon, Hubert Deragon, Jona Starek and Bastian Toelhoej.
Allmon and Toelhoej are two of the team's three captains and represent some of the most versatile and dynamic players on the team. Allmon was previously a forward for the Gaels but since has been a staple in the team's back line as a center back. Toelhoej has played in all three levels for the Gaels this season but has helped anchor the team's midfield for the majority of the season. Jona Starek and Hubert Deragon have led the newcomers this season, Starek in the team's midfield and Deragon primarily as an outside back. Starek and Toelhoej are the only two players on the team to have started all ten matches while Allmon and Deragon have combined for eleven 90-minute matches.
Series History…
Over the past decade it's been a coin flip between these two historic programs. Saint Mary's is 10-11-5 against Santa Clara dating back to 2007 but have not gotten a win over the Broncos since 2020. From 2018-2020, the Gaels won four straight wins but the Broncos have had the edge as of late, with a 2-0-2 record over their last four. Santa Clara sits in third place in the WCC with a 1-0-2 record while the Gaels are in tenth at 0-2-1 and still searching for their first win of the season.
Saint Mary's is unbeaten against LMU over their last three matches with a record of 2-0-1. Dating back to 2002, the Gaels are 13-11-2 with a pair of three-match win streaks during that stretch. Their last road win over the Lions came in 2023. LMU will look for their first win over the Gaels since a 2-0 home victory in 2021.
ABOUT THE BRONCOS (4-2-6, 1-0-2)
Santa Clara enters the week with a 4-2-6 overall record and are undefeated in conference play through three weeks with a 1-0-2 record. Their two defeats on the season have come from 4th ranked Stanford and Grand Canyon. They started WCC play with a pair of draws to 2024 champions San Diego and Gonzaga but just picked up their first win with a 1-0 victory over Seattle U on October 10th.
The Broncos don't score a ton of goals, averaging just 1.25 per game, but have only given up ten goals on the season for second fewest in the conference. Their stout defense has kept them in nearly every game this season and helped contribute to their conference leading six draws. Niv Berkovitz leads the team with five goals and has scored in two of his last three games.
Santa Clara is led by Cameron Rast who enters his 24th season. Rast has led the Broncos to eight NCAA Tournaments and seven WCC titles since taking over in 2002.
ABOUT THE LIONS (5-3-4, 1-0-2)
LMU enters the week at 5-3-4 and 1-0-2 in conference play. Their week will begin with a road game against nationally ranked San Diego on Wednesday, October 15th before hosting the Gaels Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM. The Lions had just one win through their first four games to start the season but then rattled off upset victories over Fullerton and UCLA including a record high nine goals in their win over the Titans.
Despite a tough schedule on paper to start conference play, the Lions earned draws against San Diego and Oregon State with their lone win coming against Pacific. Diego Lopez-Rosales leads the team with five goals along with three assists this season. Six other players for LMU have multiple goals on the year as they are averaging two goals per game, second most in the conference. LMU is led by head coach Kyle Schmid who has been with the program since 2018 and was promoted back in March of 2022.
